Draft Models

  1. Danny,

If you're going to work with a sphere, look at spherical structures in architecture, and how their spherical form contributes to function. Try googling -

    Buckminster Fuller: Biosphere

    Observatory

Check out the images that come up. Bucky's Biosphere is a frame structure that encloses a set of practical rectangular volumes that provide working spaces.

An observatory features a spherical dome roof that can open up / close down, and turn to align itself with a particular sector of the sky.

You could consider either / both of these approaches and how they might inform the way you bring light into the studio space.

At the moment, a glass sphere is a very basic proposition, and needs a lot of development. How will you control heat inside the space? (Air-conditioning is not an option....)

As with others in the group, you also need to think about these other things:
Support: Walls have a thickness need to be min. 300mm thick to play a structural role. If your building looks like it's made of paper or cardboard, you'll need to correct this.

Light: How do you get light into the different spaces?? Have a look at the examples of gallery spaces on our group blog and look at how light is admitted to the space and where it comes from - an opening in the roof, high up in the wall, down through a multiple-height space.

Scale: Have a look at the size of the human you have in your model in comparison to the size of the spaces - they are monumentally large spaces. As a rule, a studio space should have a ceiling height of about 4-5 metres max. There may be some areas in the studio where the ceiling height could be smaller, to a minimum of 2.4 metres.

The gallery space can have a higher ceiling height, between 4 and 6 metres. This will establish some sense of hierarchy between the each of your studio spaces and the gallery space.

  2. Thanks for the feedback Ken, I will definitely look into that and try my best to alter my design based on what you said.
